Trek Highlights Sacred Sites of Char Dham

  • Yamunotri Elevation: 3,293 meters (10,804 feet) Significance: Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna River, is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. The temple, situated in the western Garhwal Himalayas, was built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. Pilgrims visit Yamunotri to offer prayers and take a holy dip in the thermal springs. Key Attractions: Surya Kund (a hot water spring with temperatures as high as 88°C), Divya Shila (a rock pillar that pilgrims worship before entering the temple), and the scenic trek through forests and meadows to reach the temple.
  • Gangotri Elevation: 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) Significance: Gangotri is the origin of the sacred Ganga River, considered the most holy river in Hinduism. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, was built by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa. Pilgrims visit Gangotri to perform rituals and seek blessings for purification and salvation. Key Attractions: Bhagirath Shila (where King Bhagirath meditated to bring Ganga to earth), the submerged Shivlinga (visible during winter when the water recedes), and the trek to the Gaumukh Glacier, the actual source of the Ganga.
  • Kedarnath Elevation: 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) Significance: Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, making it a highly revered pilgrimage site. The temple, believed to have been established by the Pandavas, is located near the Mandakini River and is surrounded by snow-covered peaks. Key Attractions: The Kedarnath Temple, the challenging yet rewarding trek from Gaurikund, and stunning views of the surrounding peaks, including Kedarnath Dome.
  • Badrinath Elevation: 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) Significance: Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is one of the most important temples in Hinduism. It forms part of the larger Char Dham pilgrimage circuit along with Dwarka, Puri, and Rameswaram. The temple is situated along the banks of the Alaknanda River. Key Attractions: The Badrinath Temple, Tapt Kund (a hot water spring where pilgrims bathe before entering the temple), Neelkanth Peak, and the serene beauty of the Alaknanda River.
